The establishment of new standards for teeth whitening promise greater safety for the public, according to a member of the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine who helped develop the guidelines. This information will be beneficial to both dentists who employ teeth whitening procedures and their patients.
According to Clifton Carey, PhD, the increase in the public using bleaching agents has thus caused the standards to be put into place for the health and safety of all. Carey is also a member of the American Dental Association’s Standards Committee on Dental Products, which developed the new standards.
The standards pertain to such issues as toxicity, enamel safety and proper use of available products. The next step is expected to be the formal adoption of the guidelines into the ADA Seal of Acceptance program.
