Holistic Dental Care

Within the healthcare world, there has been a historical tendency to isolate the oral region as a separate area of the body. This has led to a belief that the health status of the mouth is not related to the general health of the body. However, emerging evidence in recent years has proven that the health of the mouth is directly associated with various conditions, and may have an essential impact on the entire system. In other words, good oral habits not only saves your teeth, it could also save your life!

Holistic Dentistry Explained

A holistic dentist views the oral region as interrelated with systemic health and function. Non-surgical procedures, non-toxic restorative materials and digital X-rays are now routinely used in the practice of holistic dentistry. It is especially true for periodontal care of the mouth as health conditions, such as diabetes, cancer, and infection typically manifest themselves in the form of lesions, swelling or redness of the gums. This ‘inflammatory response’ is known to have consequences for the body as a whole.

Your Initial Visit

This is our first chance to get to know your mouth but, more important, you! We take time to ask questions about what is important to you, what brings you here today, and how we can help. We review your health history in detail, along with a visual inspection of your teeth, and the soft tissues of the mouth including the cheeks, tongue, palate and gums.

In some cases, study models may be taken to enhance our ability to recommend treatment options to you. We also perform a thorough healthy tissue screening to ensure there are no issues or areas warranting further attention.

Your examination includes recommendations for further treatment, which may include teeth cleaning and gum therapy. All patients are encouraged to take part in their care and treatment, which is why we stress the importance of home oral care, as well as education about adjuncts to that care including herbal mouth rinses and nutritional supplements to immediately improve your oral health.

The Importance of Proper Nutrition

The overall health of your body is directly related to ones nutritional intake. One notable example is sugar. Excessive sugar leads to the production of harmful toxins, which attack the susceptible enamel of the teeth, eventually causing it to break down. This process leads to the formation of decay, often culminating in tooth loss.

To remedy the condition, regular dental cleanings, coupled with diligent oral home care, are recommended. Diets rich in calcium also improve the strength and longevity of the teeth, which can permit the dentition to last a lifetime without professional intervention.

Recent Technological Advances

The ultimate goal of proper oral care is of course retention of both function and aesthetics of your teeth and gums. In support of this, we strive to remain current on the latest methods of treatment. In turn, we share this leading edge information with our patients.

Dental irregularities are now treated by the application of resin restorative materials, as well as porcelain inlays, onlays, crowns and bridges. Minor flaws, such as staining, minute fractures or diastemas (tooth spacing) can be corrected with porcelain veneers. Each treatment plan is created according to the specific and unique needs of each patient. In many cases, existing dentition is enhanced in both function and appearance.

TMJ Treatment

Your Temporomandibular Joint is a hinge, which connects your jaw to the bones in front of each ear. It allows you to move your jaw up and down and side to side. This permits one to speak, chew, and yawn.

Various traumas and stresses can lead to a dislocation of the joints, resulting in pain, swelling and chronic discomfort. Patients affected with the Disorder may have difficulty eating, swallowing and speaking.

Left untreated, TMJ Disorder can lead to the following conditions:

  • Neck pain
  • Headaches
  • Blurred vision
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Loss of hearing and
  • Bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching)

Fortunately, special techniques have been developed to ease these symptoms Treatments include relaxation exercises and appliances to prevent further deterioration of these delicate oral structures. Patients who exhibit signs of bruxism are provided mouth guards or night guards along, with continuous monitoring to help ensure a positive outcome.
